Small group tuition with low overheads
A flexible business model with low overheads
Starting a business can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. MagiKats Tuition Centres typically operate after school hours and/or at weekends, giving franchisees full control over when they offer tuition. This flexible model allows new franchisees to keep their existing income while gradually building their new business, working part-time if they choose.
Most centres run just two days a week yet still develop into substantial, profitable businesses. This makes the opportunity particularly appealing for teachers looking to transition out of classroom teaching, individuals seeking a better work–life balance, or anyone who has always wanted to work with children and is considering retraining for a new career.
One of the key advantages for new centre owners is the low running costs. Because many expenses grow in line with student numbers, centres can reach break-even with only a small group of families enrolled. Operating from community venues rather than costly retail premises also helps keep overheads low and reduces financial risk in the early stages.
There is also the option to run your tuition business as a hybrid centre, combining face-to-face sessions with online tutoring. MagiKats provides a dedicated system that allows students to access structured online learning programmes as well as in-person support.
A thriving sector that continues to grow
The Sutton Trust’s 2023 research on the tutoring landscape found that:
Almost a third (30%) of young people in England and Wales have received private or home tuition, a figure which has risen significantly since the Trust began collecting the data in 2005.
Almost half of those receiving private tuition (47%) did so to help with school work in general.
More than one in three (33%) pupils received tuition for specific GCSE exams, and 27% for a school entrance exam.
In addition:
52% of secondary school pupils agreed that their progress in school had suffered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tutoring is most effective in small groups, no larger than six or seven pupils.
Read how Sally created a flexible career path by starting her own MagiKats Tutoring Business
Sally was keen to step away from full-time teaching while still doing the job she loves, with the added flexibility of a healthier work–life balance. She reduced her hours at school and began exploring tutoring opportunities that could provide an additional income stream.
Sally explains: “MagiKats ticked all the boxes. I’m passionate about creating a positive learning environment and wanted to offer something that genuinely benefits the community while also aligning with my own ambitions. MagiKats’ values, depth of expertise, established network and the freedom to be my own boss really resonated with me.”
“The long history of the franchise and the fact that all materials were produced for me in a structured programme to teach was also a major benefit. I can offer hands-on personalised educational support that makes a real difference to a child’s progress at school.”
Five years in, Sally still loves running her centre in Lytham and has a small team of mentors who help administer the sessions, including a retired Primary school Head Teacher and A-Level age mentors. This blend of experience and relatability gives the centre the flexibility to also offer individualised one-to-one tuition, for example, children with SEND, when needed.
“We have a mix of students of all ages and needs, from Reception and Year One right through to teens studying for their GCSEs, so our workgroups are tailored to suit. Students work in small groups, which helps build a child’s confidence as well as making sessions more fun and engaging. From a business point of view, it’s also more profitable. Alongside developing strong subject skills in maths and English, we help children build important soft skills such as study habits, concentration, social interaction and teamwork, so it’s really rewarding to see children develop during their time with us. We also make sure every session ends with a game to finish on a positive note, and regular recognition for a task well done keeps children motivated so they don’t feel like learning is a chore.”
Commenting on the leap into running a franchise and attracting interest from parents, Sally said, “It’s a business that you can run alongside your usual career, so for people who may be nervous about leaving their job completely, it’s a great way to transition into building your own business. Most students stay with us for a long time, for example, if they joined us at KS2, parents see the benefit of carrying on through to KS3 as they see the positive impact the extra tuition has had.”
“I can also draw on the wealth of experience within the wider network, from the head office team to fellow franchisees. That shared knowledge creates a real sense of community and guidance when it’s needed.”

The costs
The basic cost of a MagiKats franchise is £9,500 including VAT, but don’t worry if you don’t have that sort of cash available to you. With as little as £2,000 deposit saved and a small business loan, you could get up and running. We can also connect you with a great loan provider - click here for more info. There are a number of options available to the right person, including a special package for qualified teachers. What we want is people in our network who will be great to work with and, more importantly, great at running one of our Tuition Centres. So, if you don’t have the money then don’t let that put you off - speak to us today and find out what your options are.
We believe that you should have flexibility over how you charge for the services you provide, without worrying about how that impacts on your costs. With that in mind, we do not charge an ongoing percentage based on your turnover like many franchises. Instead, we charge two types of fixed fee each month - a support fee and a materials fee.
